Knights of Silver
Silver Knights: an elite group of hardworking and dedicated seniors who invest ample time into their studies and academic career in addition to helping to the community around them. Whether taking advantage of the Dual Enrollment program or Advanced Placement classes to improve their GPA, these students gain recognition for their achievements as Silver Knight candidates.
The highly recognizable awards ceremony takes place at the James L. Knight Center in Miami on May 17 at 7 p.m.
The Silver Knight Awards were introduced in 1959 by John S. Knight, the founder and editor of the Knight-Ridder newspaper. These awards go to high achieving seniors that excel in service, leadership, involvement and academics. The students must have a minimum unweighted 3.2 GPA to be eligible for nomination.
Advisor for the program, Ms. Roxanne Brissett, mentors students to eventually be nominated into several of categories ranging from arts, athletics, world languages, English and literature, mathematics, journalism, media, choreography, performance and many more.
Seniors Kaitlyn Coyne, Alyssa Quinlan and Ilana Stein currently represent the Coral Glades SIlver Knight candidates. Coyne’s project, “Suit Up With Kaitlyn,” consists of fundraising and taking in donations for students in need of business attire for performance classes such as Deca and Debate. Quinlan promotes the importance of reading and literature to youth in the county with her project “Beyond Books.” Stein’s trains and coaches young girls in cheerleading.
“My favorite and most memorable parts about being a Silver Knight nominee was creating my portfolio and being honored for my extensive service to others over the years,” Stein said. “I truly loved coaching girls in a sport that I grew up with and loved my entire life, amongst doing other services around the county and it was so cool going through pictures and memories of my past four years to create my portfolio.”
Once nominated, these students compile their project into a portfolio containing all the information on the project and accomplishments obtained in the sections of services, overall academics and leadership. The nominees showcase their project portfolio to a panel for independent judging, depending on their category. The panel of judges selects one student to win the Silver Knight award and then three students for honorary mentions in each of the categories.
