According to feedingsouthflorida.com, close to 250,000 children in South Florida go hungry every day without assurance when their next meal will present itself. The mission of Cafeteria Manager Alan Santiago will be to open up the school cafeteria over the summer to kids 18 and under. Summer BreakSpot, in association with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, provides nutritious meals to kids and teens free of charge over the summer. This year, Mr. Santiago will introduce these services to our school.
“The purpose of this is to provide meals to the students who may not have the funds to eat over the summer,” Santiago said. “We have all of these wonderful children that are on campus all summer long and they starve because there is nobody here to feed them. I would like to make sure that they don’t starve because a nourished mind is a mind ready to learn.”
Doors open June 12 and breakfast and lunch run Mondays through Thursdays. Breakfast lasts from 8AM to 9AM and lunch runs from 11:30AM to 12:30AM. The food served will be similar to the food that is served to students now. Along with the same meals, most of the same staff will work over the summer as well. These services provide nourishment to anyone 18 and under whether or not they are a student.
